Confusion over taxi charges
Martha Kearns - Independent 29 May 2001
THE new taxi fare increases could cause confusion within the industry for at least 12 months, taxi drivers have claimed.
Work on unsealing and sealing meters and changing fare cards some which have to be sent as far as Austria has been estimated at taking 3,000 working hours.
"It will take around six months to change all of the meters. And if another hike is to come in later in November, to offset insurance increases, the whole process will have to be repeated again," said Tommy Gorman, general secretary of the National Taxi Drivers' Union. "There is already a five day wait to get a meter sealed and there are only around 15 to 20 new plates a week."
