What's the difference between a taxi and a hackney?

• A taxi can stand for hire and ply for hire on the street. A Taxi must display a TAXI display panel on the top of the car. Taxi's are allowed to use the bus lanes

• A hackney should be hired on a private hire basis by phone, email, or direct contact at a hackney office. Hackney's cannot be hailed down in a public place . Hackneys have no special dispensation to use bus lanes.  The fare should be agreed between the hirer and the hackney in advance of the journey..
